About Polish Hockey League
The Polska Hokej Liga (PHL), known as the Tauron Hokej Liga for sponsorship reasons, is the premier professional ice hockey league in Poland. Nine teams battle across a 40-game regular season from September to February, with the top eight advancing to playoffs that run through April. The 2025-26 season kicked off on September 12, 2025, and is now deep into the playoff race. This is the 91st season of Polish hockey championships and the 13th under the Polska Hokej Liga name. The league operates under the Polish Ice Hockey Federation and has seen a major power shift in recent years — the days of Podhale Nowy Targ's 19 titles are long gone, and new dynasties have emerged in Silesia.
Top teams
GKS Tychy are the defending champions after beating GKS Katowice 4-3 in the 2024-25 final. That was Tychy's latest title in a stretch of dominance — they've won multiple championships over the last decade. Unia Oświęcim took the crown in 2023-24, while GKS Katowice won back-to-back titles in 2021-22 and 2022-23. As of mid-season 2025-26, Zagłębie Sosnowiec sits at the top of the standings thanks to the league's best defense, allowing just 36 goals through 16 games. JKH GKS Jastrzębie and Unia Oświęcim are right behind them in a tight race for playoff positioning. At the bottom, newly promoted Polonia Bytom is holding their own in 7th place, while STS Sanok is struggling with a winless start to the campaign.
League format
The regular season runs 40 games per team — each of the nine clubs plays every other team five times. Points are awarded the standard way: two for a regulation win, one for an overtime or shootout loss. If a regular season game is tied after regulation, it goes to a five-minute 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime, then a shootout if needed. Playoffs are where the real hockey starts. The top eight teams qualify, and every series is best-of-seven — quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship final. The semifinal losers play a best-of-seven bronze medal series. Playoff overtime is pure sudden death: full 20-minute periods of 5-on-5 hockey until someone scores. No shootouts, no gimmicks. The league has a 5-foreigner limit on the roster and a 4-foreigner limit on the ice at any given time, plus a requirement that match lineups include at least 12 Polish players.
European competition
The PHL champion earns a spot in the Champions Hockey League qualifiers, where they'd face top clubs from Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, and Germany. Polish teams have historically struggled at that level — the gap in funding and talent is significant. Unia Oświęcim qualified for the 2024-25 Champions Hockey League but didn't make a deep run. That said, simply qualifying is a financial boost and gives Polish players invaluable experience against elite competition. The league also participates in continental cups organized by the IIHF, though those are secondary to the CHL.
Viewership
Ice hockey in Poland is regional — it's huge in Silesia and parts of southern Poland, but doesn't command national attention like soccer or even basketball. Average attendance ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 fans per game, with Tychy, Katowice, and Oświęcim leading the way. The Tychy-Katowice derby is the biggest rivalry in Polish hockey, regularly selling out the 3,000-seat Stadion Zimowy in Tychy and creating genuine playoff atmosphere during the regular season. TV ratings are modest but steady — TVP Sport broadcasts one or two games per week, and playoff viewership climbs significantly. Hardcore fans follow every shift, but casuals only tune in for the finals.
Streaming options
Streaming the Polska Hokej Liga is straightforward. TVP Sport streams select games for free through their website and mobile app — typically one or two matches per week, including some playoff games. The TVP Sport app is available on iOS and Android, completely free, no subscription required. For complete coverage — every game, every round — you'll need Emocje.tv, the same platform that carries Polish basketball and handball. Emocje.tv streams all PHL matches, regular season and playoffs. Subscriptions run about 30-40 PLN per month (roughly $8-10 USD). The platform works in Poland and internationally, though commentary is Polish-only.
TV options in Poland
TVP Sport is the primary broadcast partner for the Polska Hokej Liga. You'll find live games on the TVP Sport channel, which is available through all major Polish cable and satellite providers. TVP Sport typically broadcasts one or two matches per week, usually featuring the biggest rivalries or top-of-the-table clashes. During the playoffs, coverage expands — expect live broadcasts of all finals games and select semifinal matchups. TVP Sport is also available for free over-the-air in most of Poland, making it accessible to anyone with a TV antenna. Polsat Sport also carries occasional PHL games, though less frequently than TVP Sport.
International viewing
Watching the PHL from outside Poland takes some effort. Emocje.tv works internationally — the platform doesn't aggressively geoblock, so you can subscribe and watch from anywhere. That's your best legal option. TVP Sport's free streams are typically geoblocked to Poland, so you'll need a VPN set to a Polish server to access those games. For Polish fans living in the US, UK, Germany, or Canada, the recommended setup is a VPN plus a TVP Sport account for free games, plus an Emocje.tv subscription for full coverage. Some PHL games also appear on IIHF's YouTube channel during international breaks or special events, but that's inconsistent. There's no dedicated international streaming service like the Ekstraklasa has, so a VPN is your friend.
Current season
The 2025-26 Polska Hokej Liga regular season is in full swing as of May 2026. The regular season runs through mid-February, followed by playoffs from late February to April. Zagłębie Sosnowiec currently leads the standings with a defense that's allowed the fewest goals in the league. JKH GKS Jastrzębie and Unia Oświęcim are within striking distance, both sitting at 31 points through 16 games. Defending champions GKS Tychy are in the middle of the pack but remain dangerous — their playoff experience is unmatched. At the bottom, STS Sanok is still looking for their first win of the season. The regular season wraps up in February, then the top eight advance to the best-of-seven playoffs. GKS Tychy are defending champions after beating GKS Katowice in the 2024-25 final, but with Sosnowiec, Oświęcim, and Jastrzębie all playing at a high level, this season's champion is anyone's guess.
