About Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League is the biggest T20 cricket league in the world. The 2026 season runs from March 28 through May 31, with 10 teams competing across India. The tournament is in the final stretch, with the playoffs coming up and the final scheduled for May 31.

Top teams

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the most successful franchises in IPL history. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals are regular playoff contenders. The league expanded to 10 teams in 2022 with the addition of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. The competition is fierce. Any of six or seven teams can win it in a given year.

Format

The league has 10 teams. Each plays each other twice in the regular season for a total of 74 matches. The top four teams advance to the playoffs. The playoffs use a knockout format: Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the final. The format rewards regular-season performance while leaving room for upsets.

Viewership

The IPL pulls over 500 million viewers globally each season. The numbers are strongest in India, where the league is a cultural phenomenon. The playoffs and final draw the biggest audiences. International interest has grown with the expansion of broadcast deals in the US, UK, and Australia.
