In the women's league, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, AEK, and PAOK are the powerhouses. Panionios and AO Thiras are also competitive. The league is top-heavy, but the playoffs can produce upsets.

Format

The men's league has 12 teams. Each plays each other twice in the regular season. The top eight teams advance to the playoffs. The quarterfinals and semifinals are best-of-five series. The final is a best-of-five series for the championship. The women's league follows a similar format. The bottom teams are relegated to the A2 league.
