About Australian AFL
The AFL is the top level of Australian rules football. It's a sport unlike anything else — 18 players a side, played on massive oval grounds, with a mix of running, tackling, and high-flying marks. The league runs from March through September, with the Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The season is in full swing, with teams jockeying for position ahead of the finals.
Top teams
Collingwood is the biggest club in the league. Huge fan base, massive crowds, always a headline. Carlton, Essendon, and Richmond round out the big Victorian clubs. The Sydney Swans have been the standard in the northern states for years. The Brisbane Lions won the premiership in 2024 and are still a force. Geelong, led by a bunch of veterans who refuse to slow down, is always in the mix. The Western Bulldogs, Melbourne Demons, and Port Adelaide are regular finals contenders.
Star players
Nick Daicos from Collingwood is the best player in the league right now. The kid does things that don't look possible. Christian Petracca from Melbourne is a wrecking ball when he's on. Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs) is the complete package. Jeremy Cameron (Geelong) is still kicking bags of goals. The talent pool is deep — the AFL doesn't lack for stars.
Viewership
AFL is a religion in Australia. The Grand Final alone draws over 100,000 fans to the MCG and millions on TV. The league also pulls in a growing international audience — somewhere between 20 and 30 million people stream AFL games outside Australia each year. The domestic broadcast rights are worth $4.5 billion over the current deal. That's how big this sport is in its home market.
TV options in Australia
Foxtel and Kayo Sports own the bulk of the rights. Every single one of the 234 regular season games streams live and ad-free on Kayo. Channel 7 shows four or five games a week on free-to-air TV, including the Saturday afternoon blockbuster and the Friday night game. If you're a serious fan, Kayo is the move. If you just want the big games, Channel 7 has you covered.
International streaming
For fans outside Australia, Watch AFL is the only official option. It's a subscription service that streams every match live and on demand. You can pay for a season pass or go month to month. It's not cheap, but it's the only legal way to watch every game. The service works in the US, Europe, the UK, and most countries outside Australia. No blackouts. No regional restrictions.
Streaming options in the US and Europe
Watch AFL is the answer. It's available on web, iOS, Android, and most smart TV platforms. Some matches also show up on regional sports networks in certain countries, but that's rare. If you want to follow your team from overseas, the subscription is the way to go. The app also has full match replays, highlights, and original content.
Current season
The 2026 AFL season kicked off in March. The regular season runs through August, with the finals series in September. The Grand Final is scheduled for the last Saturday in September at the MCG. Collingwood are the defending champions after winning the flag in 2025. The Magpies are sitting near the top of the ladder again this year, with Nick Daicos putting together another Brownlow-worthy season.
