Liga MX is the top professional soccer league in Mexico. It's an 18-team competition that runs on a split calendar with two championships each year — the Apertura (July to December) and the Clausura (January to May). The Clausura is in the final stretch, with the playoffs coming up next month. The league is the most-watched soccer league in North America, regularly outdrawing MLS in TV ratings.

Top teams

Club América is the most successful club in Mexican history. They have the biggest fan base and the most titles. Chivas (Guadalajara) is their biggest rival — they only field Mexican players, which makes them unique in the league. Cruz Azul, Monterrey, and Tigres UANL are the other heavyweights. The league is top-heavy, with these clubs usually fighting for the title. The Clásico Nacional between América and Chivas is the biggest game in North American soccer.

Format

Each tournament has 18 teams playing 17 regular-season matches. The top six teams advance directly to the playoffs. The teams ranked 7th through 10th play a wild-card round for the final two spots. The playoffs are two-legged ties until the final, which is also two legs. There's no promotion or relegation in Liga MX until at least 2026, when the league is expected to reinstate promotion with the expansion of the second division.

Viewership

Liga MX pulls over 80 million viewers annually. The numbers are strongest in Mexico and among Mexican-American communities in the US. The Clásico Nacional draws the biggest audience — it's one of the most-watched soccer matches in the world. The league has a massive following in the US, where many teams have fan bases that rival MLS clubs.

In Mexico, broadcast rights are split across multiple networks. Televisa (TUDN and ViX), TV Azteca, Fox Sports Mexico, and ESPN Mexico all carry matches. Atlético San Luis games are often exclusive to ESPN and Disney+. Chivas home games are available on Prime Video or Peacock depending on the matchday.

Spanish-language coverage is on Univision, UniMás, TUDN, Telemundo, and Universo. English-language coverage has expanded through a sublicense deal with CBS — matches air on CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports Golazo Network.

Current season

The Clausura 2026 season kicked off in January. The regular season runs through April, with the playoffs starting in May. Club América are the defending champions after winning the Apertura 2025 title. Chivas, Cruz Azul, and Tigres are pushing them this year. The Leagues Cup, featuring Liga MX and MLS teams, will start in August 2026 with coverage on Apple TV's MLS Season Pass. Liga MX teams will host matches for the first time in the competition.
