About American AHL

The American Hockey League is the top development league for the NHL. It's where prospects get seasoning before making the jump to the big show. The regular season runs 72 games, and the playoffs wrap up in June. The Calder Cup is the prize at the end. The league is deep into the playoff race, with teams jockeying for position.

Top teams

The Hershey Bears are the gold standard. They've won more Calder Cups than anyone and have one of the most loyal followings in minor league sports. The Chicago Wolves always seem to be in the mix, even though they've bounced between NHL affiliates over the years. Other staples include the Rochester Americans, Grand Rapids Griffins, and the Coachella Valley Firebirds, who've made deep playoff runs since joining the league.

NHL affiliations

Every AHL team is tied to an NHL parent club. That's the whole point of the league. Prospects, rehabbing NHLers, and career AHL vets all fill out the rosters. Some affiliates keep their top prospects close — the Hershey Bears feed the Washington Capitals. Others spread talent around. The system shifts every season as NHL teams change affiliates.

Viewership

The AHL is a regional product. It pulls around 3 million fans in the seats each season, which is solid for a development league. Local markets show up for their teams, especially in places like Hershey, Rochester, and Cleveland. National TV ratings are basically non-existent. This is a league people follow because they live nearby or because they're tracking their NHL team's prospects.

Streaming options

There's no traditional TV deal for the AHL. If you want to watch, you're going through FloHockey. The platform carries every game — regular season, playoffs, the whole thing. It's called AHLTV but it's run through FloSports. A subscription runs about $30 a month or $150 for the year. That covers all AHL games plus other hockey leagues on the platform.

TV options in the US and Canada

Forget cable. The AHL isn't on ESPN, TSN, or any major sports network outside of rare local broadcasts. Some teams have regional deals with local sports channels, but those are few and far between. If you want to watch consistently, FloHockey is the only real option.

International viewing

Same deal for fans in Europe and elsewhere. FloHockey holds the global streaming rights. There's no regional free option. If you're a prospect watcher tracking a kid from your country who's grinding in the AHL, you're paying for the subscription. No way around it.

Current season

The 2025-26 AHL season kicked off in October 2025. The playoff race is heating up, with teams fighting for Calder Cup positioning. The regular season wraps up in mid-April, then the Calder Cup playoffs run through June. The Hershey Bears are the defending champs after winning it all last season.
